Seven Broncs MAAC All-Academic Honors
FLUSHING, N.Y.--The Rider University women's tennis season came to an end in the quarter-finals of the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tennis championships, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, as the Broncs fell to Marist.
"Marist was a little more experienced than we were," said head coach Ed Torres. "They played a little more consistent all the way down the line."
For Rider (4-14, 2-6 MAAC), junior Mallory Garbaravage (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands Regional) won five games at fourth singles.
The Red Foxes defeated Rider 7-0 on April 12 in Lawrenceville.
"Even though we lost a lot of matches, the team improved," Torres said. "We only lose one senior to graduation so the experiences of this season will certainly help us next year."
Rider returns 12 letterwinners for the fall of 2010.
Seven members of the women's tennis team earned MAAC All-Academic honors it was also announced on Friday.
Senior Kristina Paich (Stanhope/Lenape Valley Regional), juniors Amanda Matticks (Sewell/(Washington Township), Stephanie Renzo (Lincroft/Middletown HS South) and Mallory Garbaravage (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands Regional) and sophomores Tricia Ashmore (Sparta), Allison Clay (East Brunswick) and Andrea Panno (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks East) were recognized for compiling a grade point average over a 3.20.
Ashmore, a Secondary Education/Biology major has a 3.95 grade point average, Matticks, an Elementary Education/Psychology major has a 3.85 g.p.a., Clay, a Secondary Education/English major has a 3.82 grade point average, Renzo, an Accounting major has a 3.75 g.p.a., Garbaravage, an Accounting major, has a 3.74 grade point average, Panno, a Journalism major, has a 3.27 g.p.a. and Paich, a Marketing major has a 3.25 grade point average.
"Not only are they good tennis players, they are good students," Torres said. "That's what it is all about. Academics is very important, it sets the foundation for what they will do the rest of their lives. I am happy we have a nice, hard working team both in the classroom and on the court."
