Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match

LAWRENCEVILLE--Despite a win at first doubles by junior Tricia Ashmore (Sparta) and sophomore Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional), the Rider University women's tennis team lost to Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Monday afternoon.

Ashmore and Roche won 9-7 with the Peahens rebounding to take the second and third doubles, clinching the team point.

"The match Tricia and Marly played was their best of the year," said head coach Ed Torres.  "They beat two very fine players.  They have improved their doubles play and today was their finest hour."

"I thought the doubles match went very well," said Ashmore who is an Andrew J. Rider scholar as one of the top one percent students academically as a Secondary Education/Biology major.  "The match was pretty even and we were able to handle some pressure situations.  Marly and I played well together and on the pressure situations, we were able to pull through and keep our composure."

Saint Peter's swept all six singles matches in straight sets.

"Saint Peter's was a much improved team from last season," said Torres.  "They picked up three or four pretty good players and that is indicative by the scores."

Rider defeated Saint Peter's in Jersey City 5-2 last fall.

"Tricia is a very steady player," Torres added about his team captain.  "She is also an excellent student (4.0 grade point average).  She is hard working and has beautiful ground strokes."

Senior Mallory Garbaravage (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands Regional) won seven games at third singles before losing 7-5, 6-2.

Both the Rider men's and women's teams host Hofstra on Wednesday at 2pm.
