STATEN ISLAND, NY-The Broncs collected their first win of the fall, defeating Wagner Saturday. "We are a little more experienced than Wagner is," said Rider head coach Ed Torres. "The players are extremely happy with this win. They've come close a couple of times."
For Rider, sophomore Marly Roche (Sussex/High Point Regional) won at first singles and teamed with junior Tricia Ashmore (Sparta) to win at first doubles. Ashmore won at second singles 6-0, 6-1.
Bronc sophomore Alexa Manforti (Toms River/Toms River HS South) won at sixth singles 6-0, 6-2 and also won at third doubles 8-0. "Alexa's style is to keep the ball in play," Torres said, "which was tough to do on a windy day like today. She's a steady player who is experienced. She was a very good high school player. She won a lot of matches at Toms River. She keeps the ball alive and when she gets her shot she goes for it."
Junior Danielle White (Reading, Pa./Reading) won 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles and teamed with senior Mallory Garbaravage (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands Regional) to win 8-2 at second doubles.
Freshman Kim Leder (Sicklerville/Timber Creek) won 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles.
The Broncs host Saint Peter's Monday. "Saint Peter's has a good team," Torres said. "Hopefully all of the good teams we have been playing against have improved our game. We'll be ready for Saint Peter's."
