Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y.?Both the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Niagara University Sunday morning. “We had some pretty good matches but we are still early in the spring season,” said head coach Ed Torres. “We're not really match tough yet. We've only had about eight practices under our belt.”
For the Rider men (2-10, 0-4 MAAC), senior Casey Jedlinski (Manalapan) won 6-3, 6-1 at first singles with sophomore Aaron Goldenthal (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) winning 6-3, 6-4 at sixth singles. Jedlinski has won eight of his last nine matches.
“We played some good points,” Torres said. “Aaron has played stronger in the two matches after breaking into the starting line up. He is a happy surprise and is playing steady tennis. Aaron is a smart player.”
In doubles competition, juniors Will Haight (Sewell/Washington Township) and Marc Ashed (Vineland) teamed up for an 8-2 win at second doubles.
For the Rider women (2-9, 0-3 MAAC), freshman Allison Clay (East Brunswick) won five games at fifth singles before losing 7-5, 6-0.
“The women made too many unforced errors,” Torres said. “As a team, they have to play steadier and not give as many points away.”
Both teams are back in action on March 25 in a MAAC match at Loyola.
