Rider Signs Philly's Stewart

LAWRENCEVILLE—Daniel Stewart of Philadelphia, a senior at Neumann-Goretti High School, has signed a national letter of intent to further his education and basketball career at Rider University, Rider head coach Tommy Dempsey announced today.

“We would like to welcome Danny to our basketball family and to Rider University,” said Dempsey, who has led Rider to a program-best 58 wins over the last three seasons. “Today is a special day for Danny and his family and we are excited to have him on board as the newest addition to our program.”

A 6'7” forward, Stewart earned All-Catholic League honors last year, averaging 11.5 points and 8.0 rebounds as a junior on the 26-3 Neumann-Goretti squad.

“Danny comes from a terrific high school program and I am sure that our fans will enjoy watching him compete in a Rider uniform for years to come,” Dempsey said.

Stewart joins five other Philadelphia-area Broncs on the 2010-11 roster, Novar Gadson of John Bartram High, Carl Johnson of Lower Merion High, Patrick Mansell of Cheltenham High, Mike Ringgold of Roman Catholic and Brandon Penn of Paul Robeson High. Gadson (2009) and Ringgold (2008) were MAAC All-Rookie team members and are both Preseason All-MAAC selections this year.

Rider is picked to finish third in the MAAC this year and begins the 2009-10 season at 18th ranked Mississippi State of the SEC November 13. Rider's home opener is November 16 against Lehigh. Rider has won 22 of its last 26 home games (.846) and 127 of its last 168 games (.755) played in Alumni Gymnasium.

The 2009-10 schedule includes games at Virginia, at Kentucky and at Rutgers, with home games against Saint Joseph's and La Salle and two games in Cancun, Mexico.
