Metro Atlantic Athletic Match
JERSEY CITY, N.J.--The Rider University volleyball team lost its second match in a row, falling at Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Sunday. "We had an up and down day," said head coach Emily Ahlquist. "We never seemed to get into any type of rhythm."
The Peahens won 25-19, 25-13, 25-16.
For Rider (3-14, 1-5 MAAC), senior Amy Jeary (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary's) had 15 digs with junior Elyse Grassmuck (San Antonio, Texas/La Vernia) adding 13 assists. Grassmuck hit .286 in the match.
"There wasn't one thing that Saint Peter's did to us," Ahlquist added. "We passed well and our ball control was good. We weren't finding the right area to put the ball away. We just didn't play very well overall."
In the opening set, the Peahens scored 12 of the first 17 points, eventually opening up a 10-point lead 18-8. The Broncs cut the deficit to five (24-19) off two kills by junior Kristy Love (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) but could get no closer. Love finished with four kills on the day.
Set two saw Saint Peter's jump out to an 11-1 lead, eventually winning the set by 12 by out hitting Rider .162 to .025.
Tied at 11 in the third set, the Peahens used an 11-1 run to take a 21-12 lead and clinch the match with the nine point win.
Saint Peter's (6-11, 3-3 MAAC) defeated the Broncs 3-1 in Jersey City and 3-2 in Lawrenceville last season and the Peahens have won 18 of the 30 matches in the all-time series including the last nine in a row.
Rider hosts Niagara at noon on Saturday in a MAAC match at the Student Recreation Center on the Lawrenceville campus.
