Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.--Despite 17 assists from junior Amanda Piccolini (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville), the Rider University volleyball team was swept by Marist College 3-0 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon.

The Red Foxes won 25-18, 25-14, 25-8.

"We are battling both injury and illness," said head coach Emily Ahlquist.

Rider battled the Red Foxes point for point in the opening set with an 8-8 tie after the first 16 points. Marist used a 6-1 run to open up a five-point lead and eventually won the set by seven.

Leading 5-4 in the second set, the Red Foxes scored nine of the next 11 points to lead 16-6 and won the set by 11.

Rider led 1-0 in the third set before Marist went on a 10-1 run to seal the match, winning the set by 17.

Also for the Broncs, senior Brittany Hayes (Mitchellville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) had five kills and three blocks.

The teams meet in Lawrenceville in the final match of the 2009 season on November 15 at the Student Recreation Center.

Marist defeated Rider 3-0 in Poughkeepsie and 3-1 in Lawrenceville last season and the Red Foxes lead the overall series 13-11. Rider last defeated Marist during the 2005 season.

Rider (3-17, 1-8 MAAC), which has lost five in a row and 11 of 12 matches, travels to Fairfield for a MAAC match on Sunday. The Broncs defeated the Stags 3-1 in Lawrenceville on September 27.

"We will work harder on Sunday to not let the outside distractions affect how we play," Ahlquist added. "We expect to come back strong tomorrow."
