Rider at VA Duals

Old Dominion University 25, Rider University 12

HAMPTON, VA?The Broncs lost to Colonial Athletic Association rival Old Dominion Saturday on the second day of the 29th Annual Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament, held at the Hampton Coliseum. “The most important thing is the fact that we got the guys to wrestle hard after a match last week where we felt they did not wrestle hard,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.

“I think we got it turned around down here.”

Rider went 1-2 at the VA Duals. “We're wrestling harder and heading in the right direction,” Taylor said, “but we still have a lot of work to do between now and the end of the year.”

The Broncs won just three of 10 bouts against the sixth seed, 23rd ranked Old Dominion

Saturday morning.

For Rider (2-4) junior Michael Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills), ranked 17th in the nation, won to get Rider on the board and went 2-1 in the Duals, his only loss coming to the top ranked wrestler in the nation. “Mike wrestled well,” Taylor said. “He had a good tournament. Even when he lost he gave the national champ a good match.”

Junior Ed Bordas (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) won at heavyweight for the final score. Bordas also went 2-1 in the tournament. “Eddie wrestled real well,” Taylor said.

Senior Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, NJ/Lenape), ranked fifth in the nation, won by forfeit and was 3-0 in the tournament.

The Broncs travel to George Mason for the CAA Duals January 17. “We've got three more tough dual meets down there,“ Taylor said, as the Broncs take on nationally ranked Hofstra, host George Mason and Binghamton. “We're going to have to wrestle really well to beat these teams. Hofstra just beat Penn State. We'll have to put it all together but we're looking forward to it.”
