HAMILTON, NY?The Broncs lost to tournament host Colgate in the Raiders/Adidas Fall Classic Sunday. “A lot of guys got some quality time on the field this weekend and we had some youngsters do some good things for us,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager.
Colgate out-shot Rider 22-1. “Colgate is that good,” Fager said. “They were Patriot League champs last year and I'd be surprised if they are not in the finals again this year.”
The Raiders (2-0-2) broke open a scoreless game with four goals in a 16-minute span in the second half. “The second half began and Colgate came out with a lot of intensity, a lot of drive,” Fager sais, “and they got three quick goals and another on five minutes later. And that was the game.”
The two teams played to a scoreless first half. “The first 45 minutes we did everything we were planning on doing exactly,” Fager said. “The guys followed the game plan to a tee, and the game was where we thought we could hold it and keep it there.”
Rider senior goalkeeper Randall Zapolski (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) made eight saves.
Senior Colin Jennings (Wall, N.J./Wall/Elizabethtown) was named to the All-Tournament team.
Rider (1-3) travels to Monmouth September 14. “We kept some of our key players who were injured off the field, and we expect to have them back next weekend,” Fager said. “We'll be a lot deeper next Sunday when we get some healthy bodies back.”
