TOWSON, MD?The Broncs suffered their third straight 1-0 loss, the latest coming in overtime at Towson Thursday afternoon. “You can handle a 1-0 defeat if you put your best performance out there, but we didn't put our best performance out there,” said head coach Drayson Hounsome. “We didn't play to our strengths. I was very disappointed today.”
The highlight of the game was the outstanding play of Rider sophomore goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West), who made a career-high 16 saves. “I didn't know how many saves I made but I knew it was more than a lot,” Post said.
“Without Alex Post, who was unbelievable, it would not have been 1-0,” Hounsome said. “It could have been six or seven.”
Post entered the game ranked second in the MAAC in saves. “It's not necessarily a bad thing,” Post said, “it keeps me on my toes. I have really good defenders in front of me.”
Tiger Melissa Gomes scored her first goal of the season in the 97th minute on a header off of a corner kick, the unlucky 13th corner for Towson. Rider had three corner kicks.
“We gave away a corner we shouldn't have given away and they scored after a scramble with a header in the box,” Hounsome said.
Towson (3-2) out-shot Rider (0-3-1) 36-5. “We looked dangerous when we counter-attacked,” Hounsome said. “It was the first time we played a team that played exactly the same formation as us, and they played it better than us.”
“The result could have been better but I felt we worked hard in the second half,” Post said. “We cleaned up in the second half a lot of the mistakes we made in the first half.”
Rider suffered a 2-0 lost to the Tigers last season, a loss that ended Rider's unbeaten streak at eight games. “We are a lot stronger this year than we were last year,” Post said. Rider has never beaten Towson in four meetings. Towson defeated Lafayette 1-0 earlier this season, while Rider tied Lafayette 2-2 in the season opener.
The trip to Towson began a string of five games on the road for the Broncs. The Broncs travel to Fairleigh Dickinson University Sunday, before heading west to Colorado next weekend. “We have to win a game,” Hounsome said. “We have to find a way to win, doing anything in our powers. It doesn't have to be pretty, it can be ugly, but we have to find a way to win.”
