NEWARK?In a match that originally didn't count, the NJIT Highlanders defeated the Rider women's tennis team to open the 2008 season on Tuesday.
"NJIT only had four players available due to injury," explained head coach Ed Torres. "Both NJIT and Rider wanted the teams to be able to at least play a live match so instead of re-scheduling for the spring, I brought up the women's team with the men. There was a misunderstanding about whether the match would count and after consulting with our league (MAAC) and the NCAA, it was decided that it would."
For Rider (0-1) freshman Tricia Ashmore won five games at third singles before falling in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
The women's team hosts Monmouth on Thursday at 3:30pm.
Both the Rider men (0-1) and women host Delaware State on Sunday at noon on the Lawrenceville, New Jersey campus.
