SYRACUSE, NY?The Broncs lost twice to Le Moyne in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday. “It was just one of those days,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
In the first game, Le Moyne pitcher Eric Beaulac pitched a no-hitter. “They made all of the plays for him,” Davis said.
Rider junior Mike Petrowski (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) pitched a four-hitter through eight innings, striking out three and walking just one. “Petrowski pitched an outstanding game,” Davis said.
Le Moyne scored its only run in the fourth inning on a single, a hit batsman, a sacrifice bunt and a ground out RBI.
In the top of the fourth inning with a runner on first senior David Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./American Heritage) was robbed of a home run when the Le Moyne center fielder went over the fence to make the catch to end the inning. “When he jumped the fence he didn't have the ball, and he caught it on the other side of the fence and came down with it,” Davis said. “Probably the best play that I've ever seen by an outfielder. The ball went over the fence and he went over the fence after it. He caught it over the fence.”
In the second game, Rider (25-23) took a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning when freshman Steve Galella (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) hit a two-run single and junior Sean Olson (Vineland, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) hit an RBI double. “Galella and Olson both had big two-out hits,” Davis said.
Galella and Olson each had two of Rider's five hits.
Le Moyne (27-20) came back and scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on nine hits and three Rider errors. “We gave up one run in the first 14 innings, and they had to earn that one run,” Davis said, “and then in that one inning it snow balled.”
The Broncs left 10 runners on base in the second game.
Le Moyne is a former member of the MAAC in baseball only, and won the MAAC Championship in 2007, 2004, 2003 and 1998.
Rider and Le Moyne have met 31 times since the series began in 1998, with Rider winning nine.
The third game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 12 noon.
