LAERENCEVILLE?In a four hour marathon, the Rider University men's and women's tennis teams lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match to Loyola on Monday.

“I was disappointed in the match,” said head coach Ed Torres.  “Loyola is not that much better than we are and the match should have been closer.  Loyola did necessarily make great shots but they made a lot less errors than we did.  We match up pretty well with Loyola and we should have been more competitive on both sides.”

For the Rider men, senior Jim Leone (Forked River/Lacey Township) won in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 at sixth singles with senior Casey Jedlinski (Manalapan) falling in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at number one singles.

Jim Leone kept the ball in play and didn't make the errors that the others were making,” Torres added.  “In the second set, Jim got down 4-0 before battling back to win seven of the last eight games.  He played a very steady match.”

The men's team plays Manhattan in a MAAC match in Jersey City, New Jersey on Tuesday at 6:30pm with the women's team traveling to Wagner for a 2:00pm non-conference match on Wednesday.

“The Manhattan match for the men is going to come down to the doubles point,” Torres said.  Manhattan is the four-time defending MAAC champions however three of their top players graduated so we have a great opportunity to match up with them and if we can take the doubles point, we have as good of a chance as any to win the match.”
