Siena College 6, Rider University 1
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
LAWRENCEVILLE?The Rider University women's tennis team concluded its 2008 regular season with a 6-1 loss to Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on Tuesday. “It was a learning experience for us today,” said head coach Ed Torres. “Siena's two top players played for the Saint championship team from a few years ago and they are pretty good.”
For the Broncs, junior Sabrina Govindarajan (Berkeley Heights/Governor Livingston) won at third singles by injury default.
Also for Rider, junior Danielle Morse (Edison/Hopewell Valley) won four games before falling at number two singles 6-2, 6-2.
“Siena's number one is the best player in the MAAC,” Torres added. “She very well could win the most valuable player in the league this year.”
Both the men's and women's teams will conclude the spring season at the MAAC Championships at the United States Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. April 18-20.
“We are going to play one of the top seeds for both the men and women,” said Torres. “Having faced a team earlier in the season, we may play a little better but in tennis, it is hard to make adjustments the second time around. You have to have years of training to make those adjustments which is very unique to our sport. Experience usually wins out.”
The pairings will be announced by the conference office on Thursday. “The teams will do their best,” Torres added. “It will be a very tough match but we'll go there and see what happens.”
