DOVER, Del.?The Rider University men's and women's tennis teams were swept by the Hornets in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon.  Delaware State is a very strong team,” said head coach Ed Torres.  “The men's team was shorthanded and the women's team is young and DSU took advantage of that combination.”

For the Rider men, junior Casey Jedlinski (Manalapan) fell in three sets at first singles  6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 10-6 with freshman Robert Olsen (Marlton/Cherokee) also losing at fourth singles in three sets 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 10-6.

“The men's team came into the match with only five players today,” said Torres.  “A combination of injuries and the availability of players due to class had us out gunned from the start.  With a full line up, we would have made it closer.”

For the women's team sophomore Kristina Paich (Stanhope/Lenape Valley Regional) won seven games in a hard fought match at second singles before losing 6-2, 7-5.

“On the women's side, Delaware State is extremely powerful,” said Torres.  “It was a learning experience.  By playing such a strong team, you get to see first hand the improvement you need just to win a few games.”

The men's team hosts Fordham on Saturday in a non-conference match with both teams traveling to Fairfield on Sunday for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match.
