Seton Hall University 12, Rider University 3
LAWRENCEVILLE?Despite a pair of 400-foot doubles by junior Maurice Williams (Ocean, N.J./Monmouth Regional), the Broncs lost to Seton Hall Tuesday. “We didn't do much today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
Seton Hall banged out 17 hits, including two home runs, off of five Bronc pitchers.
Pirate catcher Frank Esposito and third baseman Chris Fontenelli each had four hits for Seton Hall (14-12), with Esposito adding four RBI.
In the second inning Williams doubled and scored on an RBI single by freshman John Ralston (Annandale, Va./Paul VI) to give Rider (11-11) a 2-0 lead. “That was the first time in a while we got up a couple of runs,” Davis said. “we have to be able to come out and put up a zero after we score, and we didn't do that.”
Williams' RBI double in the sixth inning cut the lead to 5-3. “Mo hit the ball hard, but one guy can't do it all,” Davis said.
Seton Hall scored six runs in the seventh inning, five unearned, on six hits and a Rider error to put the game out of reach. “The six runs killed us,” Davis said.
Junior James Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) also had two hits for Rider and stole two bases.
Rider travels to Temple Wednesday for a 3pm game. “It isn't like we haven't lost before,” Davis said, “we just have to bounce back tomorrow.”
