#22 Old Dominion University 32, Rider University 7
NORFOLK, VA?The Broncs won just two bouts against nationally ranked ODU in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet Sunday evening. “We just didn't wrestler real well today,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.
For Rider (6-10, 3-3 CAA), 12th ranked junior 184 Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape) and 12th ranked senior 197 T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) won, with Morrison picking up a major decision.
“Doug and T.J. are national caliber kids, so you would expect them to step up,” Taylor said, “and they did.”
Old Dominion (16-3, 6-1 CAA) had five wrestlers nationally ranked in the line up. “They are a good team with quality wrestlers,” Taylor said of ODU. They are tough particularly in the light weights, and the kid that Jason Lapham wrestled is a very skilled kid."
The Broncs were missing two starters, including 18th ranked Don Fisch at 149. “The problem that we are still suffering is that we've got people out of the line up,” Taylor said. “It gets to be a snowball.”
Rider travels to Lehigh Thursday before hosting #2 Nebraska Saturday. “Lehigh will be another tough one, and with Nebraska, well, I think they're ranked second in the country,” Taylor said.
