Loyola College 3, Rider University 1
Metro Atlantic Conference Match
BALTIMORE, Md. ? The Rider University volleyball team dropped its sixth match in a row, falling 3-1 to Loyola College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon. “We had a lot of close set scores,” said head coach Emily Ahlquist. “We should have won set two, but we mentally let our guard down. We let a few errors get us down and we weren't able to recover. Loyola is a scrappy team though. They never let down; they just kept fighting and pushing and we just had too many lapses of our own.”
The Greyhounds defeated the Broncs 22-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-23.
For Rider (9-16, 2-13 MAAC), senior Lacey Johnson (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) led the team with a 'double-double' of 11 kills and 16 digs while sophomore Katelyn Thompson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) notched 10 kills. Aiding both Johnson and Thompson was sophomore Amanda Piccolini (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville) who had 20 assists on the afternoon.
“Lacey and Katelyn were able to find some holes in the defense which was great,” said Ahlquist. “I wish the consistency was a little better, but when we needed the ball put down they used a variety of shots to find the holes which was nice to see.”
Also for the Broncs, junior Amy Jeary (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary's) had a strong defensive game leading the team with 19 digs.
In set one at 5-5, the Broncs went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-6 lead and ultimately take the set by three.
In set two, Rider went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-8 lead, before allowing Loyola to fight its way back and take the set by two.
In the third set, Rider held the lead until the Greyhounds evened the set 17-17 and eventually took the set by four points.
In the fourth and final set, the Broncs battled back from a nine point deficit but ultimately lost the set by two.
Rider continues its MAAC schedule with a match against Marist College on Sunday, November 9th at 2pm in Lawrenceville, N.J.
“It should be a great match,” adds Ahlquist.
