Lafayette College 7, Rider University 0
LAWRENCEVILLE?The Rider University women's tennis team lost to Lafayette College 7-0 on Wednesday in a non-conference match. “Lafayette had a well balanced team,” said head coach Ed Torres. “We gave them a good match but they were very strong, especially at the bottom of the lineup.”
For Rider (1-6), junior Alyssa Markovits (Scotch Plains/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and sophomore Amanda Matticks (Sewell/Washington Township) teamed up for an 8-4 win at number three doubles.
“Amanda played doubles all through high school and is kind of a doubles specialist,” Torres said. “We give her different partners and she how she does. She may make a few errors but she really knows the doubles game. Her and Alyssa played a very steady match.”
For Matticks, it was her second doubles win of the season and first with Markovits.
The match was originally scheduled for September 26 but was postponed due to rain.
“The top of our lineup also gave Lafayette a run,” Torres added. “Morse, Paich and Ashmore had quality matches and played closer than the scores indicated.”
Senior Danielle Morse (Edison/Hopewell Valley) lost at number one singles 6-1, 7-5, junior Kristina Paich (Stanhope/Lenape Valley Regional) dropped a straight set match at number two singles 7-5, 6-2 and freshman Tricia Ashmore (Sparta) was downed 6-3, 6-4 at number three singles.
The Broncs compete at the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Tournament for Women this weekend.
