FAIRFAX, Va.?The Broncs swept Campbell and Binghamton on day two of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Duals hosted this weekend by George Mason University.  Rider finished 2-2 in the two-day event.  “Our success this weekend will make us sharper for the conference championships next month,” said head coach Gary Taylor.  “And we'll need to be.  Just because we beat a wrestler today does not mean we'll beat the same opponent next month at CAA's.  All of the conference wrestlers are very good and if you aren't both physically and mentally up to the task, they can turn around and beat you.”

For Rider (3-9, 2-2 CAA), senior 197 T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) won both his matches by fall with junior 184 Doug Umbehauer (Shamong/Lenape) also winning by fall and major decision.

“We are happy to have Doug back in the lineup,” said Taylor.  “Doug and T.J. wrestle a weight class apart so it helps in practice because one feeds off the other and it helps during the match because of the same thing.  T.J. has been wrestling great and defeating some really good wrestlers before having a set back earlier this weekend against two highly ranked wrestlers.  He bounced back well today.”

“Doug [Umbehauer] has a great weekend,” associate head coach John Hangey added.  “With all of the wrestlers at this point, a little bit of confidence can really go a long way.  We've gone through a serious schedule, they are all banged up and getting the wins we got today will make us better going into the rest of the schedule.”

Bronc senior 149 Don Fisch (Williamstown/Delsea) won by fall in 15 seconds against Bob Matthews of Campbell and upset number one ranked Kyle Fried of Binghamton 7-2.  Fried entered the weekend 13th ranked in the nation at 149.  Fisch finished last season fifth in the nation at 141, earning All-American honors and recently picked up his 100th career win.

“Donnie won a good match today against Binghamton,” Taylor said.  “He wrestled well against a top-ranked kid.”

Junior 165 Jason Laphram (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown/Penn State), freshman 125 Ilyass Elmsaouri (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff), junior 133 Zac Cunliffe (Farmingdale/Howell) and junior heavyweight Ed Bordas (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central/Binghamton) also posted two wins on Saturday for Rider.

The Broncs are now 4-0 against Campbell all-time and improved to 5-0 all-time against Binghamton.

“It's been a rough year,” Taylor said.  “But we have kids who came here to wrestle the best in the nation and when you do that, you go through some tough matches along the way to give yourself a chance to be successful at the end of the season.  It is hard to be at the top every match both mentally and physically.  Sometimes you can be physically on and not in it mentally.  And sometimes it works the other way so that is why if you face this competition each time out, you put yourselves in pressure situations and learn to deal with them in a better way each time.  It culminates at the end of the year and those who handle it best get crowned champion.”

Rider hosts Clarion (1pm) and Rutgers (6pm) in Alumni Gym on February 2.
