College Wrestling at Virginia Duals
Lehigh University 21, Rider University 12
HAMPTON, VIRGINIA?The Broncs won four bouts but it was not enough to defeat Lehigh in the consolation bracket of the Virginia Duals Saturday morning.
For the Broncs, senior T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), sophomore Tom Lorenzo (West Orange), junior Jason Lapham (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) and sophomore Michael Darling (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) won their bouts.
Morrison, ranked 11th in the nation at 197, won all three of his matches at the Virginia Duals.
“T.J. had a pretty good tournament,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor said. “The Lehigh kid stalled enough to prevent a pin, but I guess that was a good strategy from their point of view. He did what he had to do. T.J. is wrestling really well right now.”
Lapham, Darling and Lorenzo all won twice in the three matches in Virginia. “Darling wrestled a nice match, and Jason had a very good tournament,” Taylor said.
Rider will wrestle Lehigh again February 14 in a dual meet in Bethlehem, PA. “We hope to have a different line up when we see them again,” Taylor said, referring to injured starters Don Fisch (Williamstown, N.J./Delsea), Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape) and Mike Miller (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine).
Rider competes at the CAA Duals next weekend at George Mason, taking on Mason, Hofstra, Campbell and Binghamton. “We should have two of our three injured starters back for that,” Taylor said. “This tournament will carry a lot of weight for the seedings at the end of the year.”
