Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
FAIRFIELD, Conn.?The three-time regular season defending conference champion Stags showed that they may be on their way to a fourth straight title, defeating Rider in straight sets on Friday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match. “Fairfield was very strong tonight,” said head coach Emily Ahlquist. “We just didn't play very well.”
Fairfield (8-9, 5-1 MAAC) defeated the Broncs 30-20, 30-22, 30-20.
“Our ball control was very suspect,” Ahlquist added. “We just seemed like we were overmatched.”
For Rider (1-14, 0-6 MAAC), freshman Amanda Piccolini (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville) had 17 assists and eight digs with fellow rookie Elyse Grassmuck (Seguin, Texas/La Vernia) adding 13 assists.
Sophomore Brittany Hayes (Mitchelleville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) had 11 kills for Rider with freshman Katelyn Thompson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) compiling 10 digs.
The Broncs, who were in Poughkeepsie, New York last night got back to Rider early this morning, attended classes and were right back on the bus for the two plus hour ride to Fairfield. “We had to get back for class,” Ahlquist said. “Every team has to do that so you can use that as an excuse. We need to learn to play better and push through when we have a tough travel schedule. Tonight was hopefully a learning experience.”
The Broncs have lost eight straight and are now 4-11 all-time against the Stags.
Rider hosts Saint Peter's on Thursday in a MAAC match at Alumni Gym starting at 6:00pm.
