Rider University 69, Iona College 58
LAWRENCEVILLE--Sophomore guard Jerry Johnson (Lancaster, PA/J. P. McCaskey) scored 25 points, making all eight of his foul shots, to lead Rider to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win over Iona Thursday.
Holding a 56-50 lead with 2:33 left to play, Rider (10-12, 5-8 MAAC) went on an 8-2 run, six points by Johnson, to take a 64-52 lead with 1:00 left to play.
With the score tied at 20-20, Rider out-scored Iona 11-2 over the final 5:22 of the first half to take a 31-22 lead at intermission.
For Iona (13-9, 8-5 MAAC), Courtney Fields compiled 19 points and seven rebounds off of the bench. Steve Smith added 14 points for the Gaels.
For Rider, sophomore Robert Taylor (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann) and senior Robert Reed (London, England) each added 10 points, with Taylor grabbing eight rebounds.
Rider travels to Fairfield Monday, President's Day, for a 4:00 pm game televised live on the Madison Square Garden Network.
