Pittaro picks up 700th win
PISCATAWAY, NJ?Sophomore David Deane (Morristown) lined a one out pinch hit double down the left field line, scoring sophomore Scott Rich (Hamilton Square/Steinert) in the ninth inning to give Rider University (13-13) a 4-3 win at Rutgers (15-13) Wednesday.
The win was victory #700 for head coach Sonny Pittaro (700-611), now in his 32nd year at Rider. Pittaro entered the 2002 season 38th among active NCAA Division I coaches in wins. Only 35 Division I coaches entered the 2002 season with 700 or more wins.
Junior Carl Loadenthal (Southampton, PA/William Tennent) walked three times, stole three bases and scored twice to pace the Bronc offense. Junior Casey Long (Shillinton, PA/Gov. Mifflin) went two for three with two RBI, including his first homerun of the season for Rider.
Senior Mark Fisher (Hamilton Square/W.W. Plainsboro), the MAAC pitcher of the week last week, recorded the final out of the eighth inning to pick up his third win of the season. Junior Artie McShane (Yonkers, NY/Fordham Prep) recorded the final out of the game to pick up his first save of the season.
The Broncs return home to face Temple on Thursday.
