Rider's Porter All-America
Bronc Star Heading to Portsmouth
LAWRENCEVILLE-- Mario Porter of the Rider University basketball team was named honorable mention All-America by the Associated Press Tuesday.
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Porter is Rider's first All-American basketball player since Darrick Suber earned All-America honors in 1993.
A 6'6" forward from Irvington, NJ, Porter led the MAAC in both scoring (20.1) and rebounding (8.5), and was among the league leaders in field goal percentage (.502), steals (53) and blocks (23), and was named to the National Basketball Coaches Association All-District 3 team in February.
The first week of April Porter will be playing in the 50th annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Virginia, where 64 of the top college seniors in the nation have been invited to exhibit their skills before national dignitaries and NBA General Managers.
Porter led Rider to the top seed in the MAAC Championship Tournament this season. Porter graduates second on the Rider career scoring list with 1,782 points, and his total of 686 rebounds is seventh highest at Rider. Porter is one of only two Rider players to ever compile both 1,700 points and 600 rebounds.
