Marist College 80, Rider University 69
TRENTON--Despite 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds from senior Mario Porter (Irvington/Irvington) the Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Marist at Trenton's Sovereign Bank Arena Sunday.
Senior guard Sean Kennedy scored 20 points to lead Marist. Rider freshman Jerry Johnson (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) added 17 points for the Broncs.
Trailing 40-33, Marist (6-2, 2-0 MAAC) out-scored Rider (2-5, 0-1 MAAC) 5-0 to end the first half, and 9-3 to start the second half, to take a 47-43 lead with 16:30 left to play. Marist never trailed again.
Trailing 28-16 with seven minutes left in the first half, Marist went on a 17-7 run, 10 points by Dennis Young, to cut the lead to 35-33 with 2:06 left in the first half. Young finished with 13 points.
For Marist, David Bennett added 16 points, while Rick Smith added 13 points and five assists.
Rider is now 0-5 in the Sovereign Bank Arena. Marist is just 2-9 playing at Rider's Alumni Gymnasium campus facility.
The Broncs return to the Sovereign Bank Arena to host Delaware December 15.
