Men's Tennis Blanks Merrimack, Extends Win Streak to Three

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — Men's Tennis extended its winning streak to three with a shutout victory on Friday afternoon against the Merrimack Warriors.

All three doubles pairings began the day with a win. Heath Paul Waters and Ibragim Turgambekov picked up a dominant 6-1 decision, while the dynamic duo of Matteus Froberg Dahlin and Cole Thurgur secured a victory by the same score. Axel Engstrom and Roger Martinez capped it off with a 6-4 win of their own.

In singles, five out of the six matches ended in straight-set victories for the Broncs. Thurgur extended his win streak to fifteen between singles and doubles, remaining perfect this season with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Nathan Slattery extended his win streak in singles to six, picking up a 7-5, 6-4 decision. Matthew Griscti concluded the day with a dominant victory on court six, winning 6-3, 6-1.

"These guys push each other," Head Coach Timothy Koch said after the match. "It's competition every day in practice and we set the bar really high."

This is the third match of the season in which Rider has shut out a Division I opponent, with the first two coming against Morgan State in mid-March and Niagara last Sunday. Men's Tennis hadn't shut out a Division I opponent in sixteen seasons before blanking Morgan State.

"This team beat us 4-3 last year, so we don't take it for granted," Koch said. "We certainly enjoy the win, but we still have more ways to go in terms of achieving our ultimate goal [of] winning the championship."

Men's Tennis will host Sacred Heart tomorrow morning. The Broncs are perfect at home so far this season with a 4-0 record.
