Baseball Battles but Falls Short in 11-10 Thriller at Saint Joseph’s

PHILADELPHIA, PA – A high-scoring contest went down to the final inning, but the Rider baseball team came up just short on the road at Saint Joseph's, 11-10, on Wednesday afternoon. The Broncs fall to 12-6 overall (8-1 MAAC), while the Hawks improve to 13-10 (6-0 A-10).

Rider struck first in the opening frame as Will Gallagher led off with a triple down the right field line. Erich Hartmann followed with a sacrifice fly to bring him home, and after Kyle Neri worked a walk, Anthony Paskell lined a ball into left-center to put two runners in scoring position. With two outs, Nick Shuhet delivered a single up the middle to plate both runners and give the Broncs a 3-0 lead.

Saint Joseph's responded in the second with a two-run home run to trim the deficit to one.

The Broncs answered in the third as Shuhet opened the inning with a single and Dillion Jennings drew a walk. Gallagher came through again, driving a ball to left to score two and extend the lead to 5-2.

The Hawks countered once more in the bottom half with another two-run blast to make it 5-4.

Rider broke things open in the fourth. Neri singled to start the inning and Paskell walked, while Magoulick followed with another free pass to load the bases. Eliot Medlock then launched a grand slam over the left field wall, pushing the Broncs in front 9-4.

Saint Joseph's continued to chip away, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-7. The Hawks evened the score in the fifth with two more runs before taking their first lead of the game in the seventh, plating a pair to go ahead 11-9.

Out of the bullpen, Chris Montone retired the side at the bottom of the eighth to keep Rider within striking distance heading into the ninth. Pinch hitter Peter Crespo sparked the rally with a double down the right field line, and Gallagher followed with an RBI single through the left side to bring the tying run aboard.

The Broncs put the pressure on in the final frame but were unable to find the equalizer, falling 11-10 in a back-and-forth contest.

Quotes and Notes
"We battled all game, no question, but when you score 10 runs, you expect to come away with a win. We weren't sharp defensively and didn't do enough on the mound or in the field. I thought we competed and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but sometimes it just doesn't go your way. Offensively, we had some strong performances and gave ourselves a chance, but couldn't quite finish it." - Acting Head Coach Dr. Barry Davis

- Neri and Gallagher have now reached base in all 17 games this season, while Shuhet and Paskell extended their on-base streaks to 16 games.
