Baseball’s Late Rally Comes Up Short in 5-4 Finale Loss at Delaware

NEWARK, DE – The Rider baseball team erased a three-run deficit with a late push, but Delaware held off the rally as the Broncs fell, 5-4, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Delaware struck first with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead.

The Broncs answered in the second. Nick Shuhet led off the frame with a double to left before Peter Crespo worked a walk to put two aboard. After AJ Labrusciano laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, Shuhet came home on a passed ball to even the score at 1-1.

The Blue Hens threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but Clayton Poliey came in clutch. The right-hander recorded back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam and keep the game tied.

Delaware broke through in the sixth. A fly ball lost in the sun allowed the inning to extend, and the Blue Hens capitalized with three runs in the frame to move in front, 4-1.

Rider mounted its rally in the seventh. Will Gallagher opened the inning with a single before Anthony Paskell laced an RBI double down the left-field line to score Gallagher. After an Erich Hartmann single and throwing error put runners at second and third, Kyle Neri brought home Paskell with a groundout. Medlock followed with an RBI single to left-center, trimming the deficit to 5-4.

The Broncs threatened again in the ninth, placing runners on the corners, but were unable to push across the tying run as Delaware held on for the 5-4 decision in the series finale.

Quotes and Notes
"Tough weekend overall. We had an opportunity to win today. I thought we pitched well, hit well, but unfortunately, one bad end inning defensively cost us a big inning, and that was the difference. We need to get better at doing the little things. In one-run ball games, the simple things are magnified." - Acting Head Coach Dr. Barry Davis

- Shuhet, Neri, and Medlock are all on a six-game hitting streak
