Women’s Soccer Wins Second-in-a-Row; Defeats Iona 2-0 at Ben Cohen Field

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women's soccer team recorded a 2-0 win against Iona on Saturday night while recording their second win in a row. With the win, the Broncs move to an overall record of 3-5-1 with a Metro Conference record of 2-4-0 while Iona falls to a record of 4-5-2.

Possession fell back and forth between the two teams through the opening 10 minutes of the first half. The sisters Ferrie came close to grabbing the first goal, as Ava Ferrie had her shot blocked on the edge of the box, followed by Tess Ferrie, who sent her shot close to the goal, but wide.

The Gaels then went on the attack, with the woodwork preventing a goal in the 26th minute followed by a timely save by Ashley Moore in the 31st minute to deny a goal, sending both teams into the halftime break goalless.

Moore once again was called into action in the 49th, denying another shot on goal by the Gaels while the Broncs went down the other end of the pitch, sending two shots on goal within a minute, with both shots being saved in the end.

Tess Ferrie got off the mark in 2026 with a goal in the 52nd minute, receiving a pass from Annie Small and beating the goalkeeper to the near post with a shot to take a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later in the 60th minute, Small found the ball at her feet after scrambling with the defense, beating the goalkeeper at the far post to take a 2-0 lead, scoring her first collegiate goal in the process.

Moore made more crucial saves in the 70th, 79th, and 82nd minutes to not only maintain the win for the Broncs in the end, but to earn her second clean sheet of the year.

QUOTES & NOTES

"I think it is probably more of an adjustment over the last five games really. You know, at Canisius, we could argue we were better team and we were very unlucky not to come away with a point. And then, Mount St. Mary's, we were definitely disappointed because we were the better team, had the better chances, could have buried the game, didn't, lost it. And then Merrimack, you know, managed to win that game, but obviously gave up a goal towards the end. And so, today, getting 2-0 up and then getting the shutout, those are the progressions that have come." – Head Coach Drayson Hounsome

"The win against Merrimack on the road gave us a lot of confidence coming into this game, and we knew that Iona was definitely a team that we could get a good result against. They [Iona] played a great game, but it was great that we were able to finish those chances and take that momentum from Merrimack to this game." – Sophomore Goalkeeper Ashley Moore
  • The Broncs were outshot 15-12 by the Gaels, with Rider narrowly being edged by Iona in shots on goal 6-5.
  • Ashley Moore completed six saves across the game, making five saves alone in the second half to maintain the clean sheet.
  • Tess Ferrie scored her first goal of 2026 while Small scored her first goal of her collegiate career, notching her third assist of the year in the process.
  • Leah Marcell was issued a yellow card in the 70th minute of the match.
  • With the win against the Gaels, the Broncs equal their win total from 2025.
