ROME, GA – All seven Rider University men's tennis players in the line-up earned a win to contribute to the Broncs' first ever win in a National postseason tournament, a 4-1 win over UNC Asheville in the UTR NIT Quarterfinals on Wednesday. With the win, the Broncs (12-14) advance to face the winner of Wednesday's quarterfinal match between Saint Mary's (CA) and Morgan State. UNC Asheville fell to 12-10 with the loss.
The Broncs took the doubles point with wins at the top two flights.
Cole Thurgur (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) and
Ibragim Turgambekov (Almaty, Kazakhstan) earned a 6-2 win over Griffin Lovern and Cian Ingles at No. 2, before
Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) and
Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) defeated Tarek Erlewein and Olle Sonesson Lidholt, 6-4, at No. 1 to clinch the point. The action at No. 3 was halted at 5-5 with the point decided.
In singles, the Bulldogs evened the match with a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 1 from Erlewein over Tangri. But the Broncs would take the next three decisions and the match.
Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) won in straight sets over Ingles, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4.
Cooper Dillon (Brisbane, Australia/Laurel Springs) then took down Lovern, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6, before
Axel Engstrom clinched the match with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, victory over Trevor Gray at No. 5.
