POMONA, NY – In their pursuit of an MAAC title, the Rider baseball team struck first but couldn't hold off a powerful Fairfield offense in Saturday's tournament matchup. The Broncs fell 11-1 in their first loss of the MAAC Championship, dropping them into the losers' bracket. Rider will now face the winner of Marist and Quinnipiac in an elimination game as they look to keep their title hopes alive.
After two scoreless innings,
Joe Tiroly launched his 18th home run of the season with two outs in the inning to give the Broncs a 1-0 lead.
Fairfield answered quickly in the top of the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Sean Meth delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
The momentum shifted in the top of the sixth when the Stags loaded the bases once again with two away. Dean Ferrara blew the game open with a grand slam as part of a five-run inning, giving Fairfield a 6-1 lead.
The Stags added two more runs in the seventh to extend their advantage to 8-1.
Matthew Bucciero capped the scoring with a three-run homer, pushing the final score to 11-1 in favor of Fairfield.
