Softball Swept In Doubleheader By Iona

Buchanan, Stoeckel collect five hits apiece

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Kiersten Buchanan (Holly Springs, NC/Holly Springs) and Fallyn Stoeckel (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) had five hits each, but the Rider University softball team was swept in a MAAC doubleheader by Iona, 10-1 in six innings and 5-4 in 10 innings, Tuesday afternoon at Herb and Joan Young Field. With the losses, the Broncs fall to 8-24 (2-5 MAAC), while the Gaels improve to 13-12 (6-2 MAAC).

In Game 1, Iona struck for two unearned runs in the top of the first and never trailed. The Gaels tacked on four more in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Rider got a run back in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of an error in the outfield following Olivia Burroughs' (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual) single to right, allowing her to take third. Aspen Wheeler (Lampasas, TX/Lampasas) followed with an RBI single to score Burroughs. But the Gaels kept the pressure on, adding two more runs in the third to make it an 8-1 lead. With two more in the top of the sixth and starting pitcher Samantha Rieb pitching around a one-out error, the Gaels enacted the mercy rule with a 10-1 after six.

The Gaels again jumped out in front with three runs in the top of the second in Game 2. Four base hits and a sacrifice bunt created the three runs. Another Iona tally came in the top of the fourth on a solo home run from Alivia Lichtner to make it 4-0. Kristyn Gardner (Perryville, MD/Perryville) belted her team-leading fifth home run of the year, a two-run shot to left, scoring Keegan St. Cyr (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton), who'd doubled in front of Gardner, to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth.

Rider evened the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, as Kiersten Buchanan (Holly Springs, NC/Holly Springs) led off with a double and Burroughs connected on an opposite-field two-run shot over the right-field wall. The Broncs put runners on second and third with one out on a pinch-hit single from Kayley York (Telford, PA/Souderton Area) and a double into the right-field corner from Fallyn Stoeckel (Nutley, NJ/Nutley). But after the Gaels' second pitching change of the inning, Shelby Dyer (Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) was cut down at the plate attempting to advance on a ground ball to second base and the Gaels ended the threat with a deep fly ball to center.

Broncs starting pitcher Kathryn Schmierer (Racine, WI/Racine Lutheran) retired 16 in a row after single to lead off top of 5th until Brianna Fischer's one-out ground-rule double to left in top 10th. After Schmierer got the second out, Brooke Acker hit a fly ball to right that couldn't be handled for the game-winning RBI double.

Notes
- Anna-Marie Groskritz (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) went 5.0-plus innings in the Game 1 loss, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 10 hits, four walks and a hit-by-pitch. She struck out three.
- Gabi Rodriguez (Chula Vista, CA/Olympian) pitched the sixth, allowing just an unearned run on a hit-by-pitch and an error.
- Schmierer went the full 10.0 innings in Game 2 and took the tough-luck loss. She allowed five earned runs on 10 hits without walking or hitting a batter and struck out four.
