Softball Shuts Out Sacred Heart to Take Series Win Sunday

Johnson collects two hits, two runs scored; Schmierer spins complete-game shutout

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ Shea Johnson (Carlsbad, CA/Cathedral Catholic) went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored and Kathryn Schmierer (Racine, WI/Racine Lutheran) pitched a complete-game shutout as the Rider University softball team took the rubber match of a three-game MAAC series vs. Sacred Heart, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Herb and Joan Young Field. With the win, the Broncs improve to 8-18 (2-1 MAAC), while the Pioneers fall to 10-12 (1-2 MAAC).

Rider scored twice each in the first and second innings and the support was all Schmierer needed in the shutout. Fallyn Stoeckel (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) led off the bottom of the first with a double to right and Johnson followed with an infield single and stole second to put runners on second and third. Stoeckel would score on a one-out groundout by Abby Cruz (Corona, CA/Santiago) and Kendall Reda-Fehsal (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) capped the first-inning scoring with a two-out RBI single right, scoring Johnson.

In the second, Shelby Dyer (Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) walked with one out and Johnson delivered a two-out RBI triple to make it 3-0. Johnson then scored on a fly ball that popped out of the left fielder's glove to give Rider a 4-0 lead after two.

Sacred Heart threatened with two runners on in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Schmierer pitched out of trouble, stranding both runner each time.
