PHILADELPHIA –
Keegan St. Cyr (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's and
Abby Cruz (Corona, CA/Santiago) added four hits, including three doubles, and six RBI's as the Rider University softball team swept a doubleheader at Penn, 8-0 and 7-2, Tuesday afternoon. With the wins, the Broncs improve to 6-13, while the Quakers fall to 1-12.
The Broncs opened Game 1 scoring with two runs in the first.
Fallyn Stoeckel (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and
Kiersten Buchanan (Holly Springs, NC/Holly Springs) led off with a pair of infield singles, before Cruz followed with a one-out, two-run double down the right field line. In the second, Rider blew the game open with five more runs, all with two outs, to take a 7-0 lead. A Stoeckel single, Buchanan hit-by-pitch and a
Kendall Reda-Fehsal (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) infield single on a hot shot off the pitcher loaded the bases, before Cruz and
Olivia Burroughs (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual) hit back-to-back two-run doubles. A hit-by-pitch and an error accounted for the seventh Rider run on the day.
The Broncs took an 8-0 lead with a single run in the top of the fifth.
Emma Morgan (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) walked, took second on a sacrifice bunt and was replaced on the base paths by St. Cyr. St. Cyr took third on a wild pitch and scored on
Kayley York's (Telford, PA/Souderton Area) RBI single to left center. The support was all Rider starting pitcher
Anna-Marie Groskritz (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) would need, as she spun a complete-game, five-inning, two-hit shutout, striking out five.
The Broncs again jumped out in front in the first inning of Game 2. St. Cyr ripped a single through the left side and runners were on second and third after a Reda-Fehsal double to the left-center gap. Cruz's single to left center gave the Broncs their first run.
Noelle Flail (Woolwich, NJ/Kingway Regional) got things going with one out in the second on a line drive to center that hopped over the centerfielder for a triple. An error allowed her to score Rider's second run, before
Shea Johnson (Carlsbad, CA/Cathedral Catholic) reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored on St. Cyr's single to right center to make it 3-0 Broncs after two.
In the third, Burroughs turned on an inside pitch for a one-out solo shot, making it 4-0 Rider. Penn got a two-run double in the bottom of the third cut the Broncs' lead to 4-2 after three. Rider added another run in the fifth as Cruz doubled, pinch runner
Cami Johnson (Richland, NJ/Buena Regional) moved to third on a groundout and scored on York's single to right. St. Cyr hit an RBI single and scored on a Cruz fielder's choice in the sixth to push the advantage to 7-2. The support was more than enough for the Broncs' two pitchers –
Kathryn Schmierer (Racine, WI/Racine Lutheran), who started and gave up two runs in 3.0 innings, and Stoeckel, who pitched 4.0 innings of two-hit, scoreless relief for the victory.
