FAIRFIELD, CT –
Claire Brown (Duluth, GA/Northview) and
Daniela Naves (Alvarado, Mexico/Club Med Academies) won twice each and
Maria Buss (Bocholt, Germany/Bischöfliches St.-Josef-Gymnasium Bocholt) and
Chloe Monachelli (Somers, NY/Somers) joined them in winning singles flights as the Rider University women's tennis team opened MAAC play with a 4-3 win at Sacred Heart Saturday evening. With the win, the Broncs improve to 2-5 (1-0 MAAC), while the Pioneers slip to 1-4 (0-1 MAAC).
Brown and Naves defeated Ola Irla Bartyzel and Aina Garriga, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles, but the Pioneers took the doubles points with a pair of 6-3 wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
But the Broncs battled back with four singles wins to take the match victory. Buss battled back from down a set at No. 2 to defeat Garriga, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Brown made quick work of Olivia Kharkover at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. Naves also breezed by Kiah James, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4, while Monachelli needed only straight sets to defeat Malena del Olmo, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5.
The Broncs return to action Sunday, when they travel to Merrimack for their second league match in as many days.
