Softball Falls to DePaul, UMass Saturday

Wheeler collects first two collegiate hits

WILMINGTON, NC – Rider University softball freshman third baseman Aspen Wheeler (Lampasas, TX/Lampasas) recorded the first two hits of her collegiate career, but the Broncs fell to DePaul, 8-0, and UMass, 2-0, on Saturday at the UNC Wilmington Tournament. The Broncs fell to 1-3 with the pair of setbacks, while DePaul improved to 6-5 and UMass moved to 5-8.

The Blue Demons jumped on the Broncs in the top of the first for five runs on four hits, a walk and two hit-by-pitches. All five runs scored with two outs. Two more two-out DePaul runs scored on a double in the third to make it 7-0, before a walk, a double and a groundout plated the eighth Blue Demons run in the fourth. The Broncs' best scoring chance came in the second, but the runner from first was thrown on at the plate on Kendall Reda-Fehsal's (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) one-out double.

Against UMass, the Broncs put two runners on in the second on Wheeler's single and a two-out walk for Olivia Burroughs (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual), but the Minutewomen got an inning-ending groundout. UMass scored first on a leadoff triple and a wild pitch to make it 1-0 after two. In the third, UMass plated another run on a single, double and a passed ball to account for the 2-0 final score. Fallyn Stoeckel (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) allowed just two runs, one earned, scattering seven hits over the full 6.0 innings. But Wheeler's two hits were all the Rider offense could produce in the game.

Notes
- Gabi Rodriguez (Chula Vista, CA/Olympian) started in the circle against DePaul and took the loss. She allowed seven earned runs on nine hits, two HBP and a walk in 3.0 innings pitched, striking out one.
