Shuhet’s Late Two-Run Homer Propels Baseball Past Campbell to Start 2025 Season

BUIES CREEK, NC – The Rider University baseball team kicked off the 2025 season with a 4-3 victory over Campbell on Friday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Broncs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Joe Tiroly launched a two-run home run in the first inning, bringing Erich Hartmann home to give Rider an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Campbell got on the board on an RBI double from Darnell Parker Jr, sending Joey Morton home.

The Broncs went hitless until the fifth inning when Charley Magoulick delivered a double to left-center, but Rider was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

PJ Craig was relieved at the bottom of the 6th after pitching 5.0 innings by Jake Dorety

At the bottom of the 7th, Dalen Thompson singled to the right-center field to give Campbell life. After solid base running from Thompson and Charlie Meglio, the Fighting Camels evened things up at two.

With Campbell having bases loaded and only one out in the bottom of the 8th, Zach Silfies got the call on the mound for the Broncs in a tough position. Silfies struck out the very next batter to give the Rider momentum. The inning ended after a fly-out ball to center field with the score still even at two heading to the ninth.

Without a hit since the fifth inning, Kyle Neri reached base for Rider in the top of the ninth, forcing a pitching change for Campbell. Shortly after, Nick Shuhet launched a towering home run to left field off Drew Siegner's first pitch on the mound, sending Neri home and giving the Broncs a late 4-2 lead.

Campbell made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth with a home run, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Silfies was clutch down the stretch, recording two key strikeouts to seal the victory for the Broncs.
