Men's Tennis Falls in Spring Opener at St. John's, 6-1

Newcomer Axel Engstrom wins Rider debut at No. 6 singles

QUEENS, NY – Rider University men's tennis newcomer Axel Engstrom won in his Broncs debut at No. 6 singles, but the Broncs fell at St. John's, 6-1, in their Spring opener Wednesday. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Red Storm is now 4-0.

The Red Storm opened the match by sweeping the doubles competition. Cooper Dillon (Brisbane, Australia/Laurel Springs) and Ibragim Turgambekov (Almaty, Kazakhstan) posted the best score for the Broncs in a 6-2 loss to Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda at No. 3.

Engstrom pulled out a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 victory at No. 6 over Groves. But the Red Storm would take the remaining five singles matches to win the match, 6-1. Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) won the first set at No. 1 against Max Amling, but fell, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5.

The remaining singles matches went to the Red Storm in straight sets. Matteus Froberg Dahlin (Lidingo, Sweden Hersby Gymnasium) was edged in his second set against Sam Edgar, 6-1, 7-6 (3), at No. 2. Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) was also competitive in his match at No. 4, but fell to Marco Cinotti, 7-5, 6-2.

The Broncs return to action Friday, when they travel to Monmouth. The match is scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. first serve from Little Silver, NJ.
