HAMDEN, CT –
Jessie Niegocki (Marana, AZ/Mountain View) went 3-for-4, but the Rider University softball team fell at Quinnipiac, 2-1, to open a three-game MAAC series Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 21-26 (13-8 MAAC), while the Bobcats improve to 20-23 (9-13 MAAC).
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, with Riley Potter leading off with a double, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on a Natalia Apatiga sacrifice fly. Rider immediately evened the score in the top of the fourth, with
Kristyn Gardner (Perryville, MD/Perryville) being hit by a pitch and being run for by
Shelby Dyer (Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional), before
Kendall Reda-Fehsal (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) hit an RBI triple.
However, Quinnipiac got consecutive singles to open the bottom of the fourth, pushed both runners up with a sacrifice bunt and scored what proved to be the winning run on a fielder's choice. The Broncs put two runners on base in each of the last two frames, but couldn't push the tying run across.
