LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University men's tennis team won four of six singles flights and battled back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 4-3, in a pivotal home MAAC match Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs improve to 5-16 (2-2 MAAC), while the Mountaineers drop to 7-12 (0-4 MAAC).
All three doubles flights were decided by 6-3 scores, with the Mountaineers taking the point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. The Broncs' duo of
Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) and
Giacomo Ghitti (Brescia, Italy/Marco Polo) earned the win over The Mount's Ryan Wagner and Luke Papayoanou at No. 3.
The Mountaineers would build their lead to 3-0 with straight-sets victories at Nos. 2 and 3, before the Broncs closed out the match with four-straight victories to win it.
Matthew Griscti (Madliena, Malta) got things started with a 6-4, 7-6, win over Victor Mignot at No. 1, before
Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) and
Jake Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) earned wins at Nos. 4 and 5 to even the match. Martinez defeated Aaron Thompson, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4, while Grimes got past Elliot Stevens, 6-0, 7-6, at No. 5, setting the stage for the decisive match No. 6.
Jonathan Arbittier (Mendham, NJ/Dallastown Area) earned the clinching win at No. 6, getting past Jarrett Karnibad, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
"While I love thrilling wins, I don't think my heart can take much more!" said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "Guys found themselves down 3-0 quickly, but played with a lot of heart to get back into the match. They never believed they were out of it. First, Matt got us on the board and it was quickly followed by Roger, Jake and Jon. Really gutsy performance today against a really good team."
The Broncs return to action Friday, when they travel to Siena for a noon first serve.
