LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ– The Rider University baseball team extended its win streak to nine games while securing their third-straight MAAC series win by taking down Siena 10-1 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Rider moves to 11-14 and 8-0 in the MAAC and Siena falls to 5-22 and 3-2 in conference.
The Broncs and Saints traded runs early as the Saints started the scoring with a double in the top of the first. The Broncs quickly matched the run in the opening frame with one of their own, thanks to a throwing error by the Siena shortstop scoring Matt Shepherd (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner|Rowan College of South Jersey) to tie the game after the first inning.
Beyond the first inning, the Broncs got a stellar outing from Brian Young (Neptune, NJ/ Communication High School). Young has had seven or more strikeouts in all three of his MAAC starts with a 2.13 ERA in conference games.
The Broncs found the lead in the second and never looked back proceeding to never trail past the 1-0 deficit in the top of the first. In the second, Shepherd drove in the go-ahead run bringing in Kyle Neri (Williamstown, N.J./St. Augustine Prep|Bryant).
In the fifth, the Broncs plated another run to go ahead 3-1 thanks to a trio of hits to start the inning from Jack Winsett (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional), Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood), and finally Luke Lesch (Gloucester TWP, Gloucester Catholic) who brought home Winsett to score the lone run of the inning.
The Broncs highest scoring innings came in the seventh and eighth where Rider brought in a combined seven runs in the two innings. In the seventh, Rider tallied three runs, with the first two scoring off a wild pitch to move the Rider lead to four. The last run of the seventh scored off a sacrifice fly from Matt Leahy (Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) who made it a 6-1 game after seven.
In Rider's final set of at-bats, they scored four runs capping off a strong second half offensively. The first runs of the frame came from Richie Sica (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) who picked up his first and second RBIs of the year driving in Skettini and Anthony Paskell (Solon, OH/Saint Ignatius) to go ahead 8-1. Joe Tiroly (Yardley, PA/ Pennsbury) got in on the action driving a ball to left for a base hit driving in Paskell to add to the scoring. Sica rounded out the scoring by coming in off a sacrifice fly from Leahy.
In the ninth, Will Gallagher (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) made quick work of the Saints going three up and three down to secure the Broncs' ninth straight win.
Quotes and Notes
"We won nine in a row and I feel the early season schedule helped us playing Duke, St John's, and East Carolina. That helps you if you use it properly. We are pitching better and pitching with some confidence." – Rider Baseball Head Coach Dr. Barry Davis
"BY (Young) was good today, he pitched well. But we went into the seventh and it was 3-1 their bullpen let them down a little bit and we took advantage of it like we did yesterday." –
Rider Baseball Head Coach Dr. Barry Davis
"One thing we have done the past couple of days is we forced their starter to raise their pitch count and force them to go to the bullpen early. We have been able to put the ball in play and forced them to make plays. At the end of the day it's a nine inning game and you just gotta keep playing and we did that today and yesterday."–
