Baseball's Comeback at Marist Comes Up Short

Rider drop first MAAC game of 2024

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Rider University baseball team scored five runs in the final frame however fell against Marist 6-5 on Sunday afternoon.  With the loss, Rider moves to 15-16 and 11-1 in the MAAC and Marist to 12-22 and 5-7 in conference.

Both offenses were kept quiet in the finale as Rider pitchers Clayton Poliey (Ringwood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) and Christian Aiello (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) combined for seven innings with only one earned run between the two. However after a lengthy weather delay, Rider and Marist turned the offense up with both teams scoring five runs in their final offensive innings. Marist tallied five runs in the bottom of the eighth to go into the ninth up 6-0 and the Broncs would respond with a late game rally.

The Broncs scored all five of their runs in the final inning with two outs, starting with Kyle Neri (Williamstown, N.J./St. Augustine Prep|Bryant) scoring Luke Lesch (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) to start the Broncs rally. Anthony Paskell (Solon, OH/Saint Ignatius) revved things up with an RBI double in the following at-bat and Matt Leahy (Woolwich, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) continued the scoring, driving in Neri with a base hit to cut the lead in half to 6-3. The Broncs loaded the bases following a pitching change by the Red Foxes giving third basemen Jack Winsett (Voorhees, NJ/ Eastern) a great chance to bring the Broncs back into the ball game. Winsett scored a base hit up the middle scoring Leahy and Paskell, cutting the lead to only one. The Broncs' comeback came up just short however as the two-out rally in the ninth would conclude on a pop-out in foul ground.
