OMAHA, NE –
Jessie Niegocki (Marana, AZ/Mountain View),
Jadeyn Merrill (Lamesa, TX/Lamesa) and
Kendall Reda-Fehsal (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) had two hits each in a 6-0 Broncs win over Kansas City, before the Rider University softball team fell to host Nebraska Omaha, 4-0, to split a pair of games Sunday at the Connie Claussen Classic. With the split, the Broncs move to 5-7, while the Roos fell to 6-17 and the Mavericks improved to 16-7.
Against Kansas City, Niegocki opened the scoring in the top of the first. She reached on a leadoff single, took second on a passed ball and scored on consecutive wild pitches with two out to make it 1-0 Rider after one. After two scoreless frames, the Broncs pushed three runs across in the fourth. Consecutive doubles from Reda-Fehsal and Merrill scored the first run, before a
Kristyn Gardner (Perryville, MD/Perryville) single and a
Maddie Luedtke (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) walk loaded the bases for
Julia Harsche (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph-by-the-Sea), who singled in another run. After a 1-2-3 double play erased two Broncs, Niegocki reached on an error, plating Luedtke with the Broncs' fourth run for a 4-0 lead.
RBI singles from Luedtke and Niegocki in the bottom of the fifth pushed Rider's to 6-0 and
Anna-Marie Groskritz (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) pitched around an error, a hit-by-pitch and an infield single that loaded the bases with one out, getting a foul pop and a fielder's choice to secure the complete-game shutout.
The story of the Nebraska Omaha game was Mavericks pitcher Sydney Nuismer, who spun a seven-inning no-hitter, limiting Rider to just a
Tristen Wren (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Etiwanda) walk in the first, a Reda-Fehsal hit-by-pitch in the seventh and 18 in a row retired in between. The Mavericks struck for a two-out, two-run single in the first, and an RBI single in the fifth and sixth innings to account for their four runs.
