Baseball's Comeback at USC-Upstate Comes Up Short

Broncs fall 16-10 at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, SC– The Rider University baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth however would come up short in their comeback efforts vs USC-Upstate dropping the finale with the Spartans 16-10 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Rider falls to 1-9 and USC-Upstate moves to 9-7.

Upstate started the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI base hit from Jace Reinhart. However, the Broncs did see strong offense early as they homered in their third straight contest thanks to Erich Hartmann's (Medford, NJ/ Shawnee) three-run blast in the top of the third giving Rider a 3-1 lead after three.

Upstate however answered the Broncs' three-run bomb with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Spartans' offense did not stop there. In the fifth inning, Upstate drove in a season-best 13 runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 15-3.

Rider's offense did fire back putting a crooked number on the board in the sixth to answer the massive Upstate inning. The Broncs drove in three runs in the sixth with RBI base hits from Jack Winsett (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) and Anthony Paskell (Solon, OH/Saint Ignatius) to make it 15-6 in the late stages.

Upstate added one more run before the Broncs looked to mount a comeback in the final frame. In the ninth inning, the Broncs did show a strong fight starting with a leadoff double from Griffin Puvel (Thurmont, MD/Saint John's Catholic Prep). Puvel was driven in one pitch later by Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood) who extended his RBI streak to four games and secured his fourth RBI of the weekend. Justin Costanzo (East Greenwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic[Widener]) and Joe Tiroly (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) tallied back-to-back base knocks for the Broncs to help load the bases as Rider looked to do damage late. Paskell started a two-out rally for the Broncs drawing a bases-loaded walk that brought in Skettini. AJ Labrusciano (Fredericksburg, VA/North Stafford) followed the walk with a base hit to score Costanzo. The Broncs' scoring would conclude when Tiroly scored on a passed ball, but the Broncs' comeback would end there.
