GREENVILLE, N.C – The Rider University baseball team started off their 2024 campaign falling to #11 East Carolina 16-2 in the season opener for both teams.
ECU started the game with a massive bottom of the first scoring seven runs in the first inning forcing Rider to go to the bullpen early in the matchup. Rider then turned to Sophomore Pitcher Christian Aiello (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) who finished with an impressive line going six innings tying a career-best with five strikeouts in his 2024 debut.
The Broncs did find offense as the day went on as the first hit of the campaign came from newcomer Kyle Neri (Williamstown, NJ/St. Augustine Prep[Bryant]) who left the yard in his first collegiate at bat in the top of the third cutting the deficit to six.
The Pirates would bring home a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings to go ahead 11-1. However, Neri struck again driving a ball to left field for his second home run of the evening capping off a strong debut for the Redshirt Freshman.
ECU did finish the evening incredibly strong, plating five runners in the bottom of the eighth to seal the deal in the opener.
