LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ— In a challenging matchup on Senior Day, Rider's women's soccer team fell to Siena, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon. The Saints got on the board first, breaking the deadlock in the 26th minute, giving them an early advantage. The Broncs fought hard to level the game, but Siena's defense held strong. The Broncs fall to 2-9-3 on the season.
After the break, the Broncs came out with renewed intensity, looking to overturn the narrow margin. Yet, in the 55th minute, a moment of misfortune swung the game further in Siena's favor. As
Genevieve Ryan attempted to clear a dangerous ball from the Rider box, the Saints were quick to pounce on the mishap and slotted it home to make it 2-0. The goal took the wind out of Rider's sails, leaving them with an uphill battle for the remainder of the match. Despite multiple chances throughout the match, the Broncs struggled to convert, leaving them unable to close the gap.
Siena's defensive organization made it difficult for Rider to break through, though the Broncs continued to press and create chances. The shot tally reflected a competitive contest, with Siena outshooting Rider 17-10 and holding a slight 6-4 edge in shots on target. Despite the difference in the scoreline, the Broncs managed to test Siena's goalkeeper several times, but the finishing touch eluded them throughout the afternoon.
Quotes and Notes
"I thought we played well today. We gave a great effort, had a couple of good opportunities but the way our season has gone has been it's a mistake here and there and a team capitalizes on our mistakes. We had a good amount of possession. It's all good positives, against the team that's got a lot of promise. They created chances today and we'll hopefully create some chances again on Wednesday."
