LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University baseball team could not overcome strong pitching from Seton Hall Tuesday afternoon, falling 3-1 at Sonny Pittaro Field. The Broncs fall to 27-14 on the season, while the Pirates improve to 21-18.
The Pirates got on the board first in the fourth using small ball. A swinging bunt, followed by a stolen base and a pair of productive outs put the first run on the board.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Scott Shaw (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With one out,
Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood) hit a double off the wall in right field. Shaw came around third and the relay throw was in plenty of time from the first baseman, but was thrown well over the catcher and to the backstop allowing Shaw to score.
The Pirates regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run inning.
The Broncs loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but could not score. In the bottom of the ninth, a pair of Seton Hall errors had runners on first and second and
Jordan Erbe (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South[UMass]) representing the winning run at the plate. Erbe hit a long fly ball that cleared the fence in left, but was just foul, and the Pirates secured the game's final out later in the at bat.
Quotes & Notes
"We left men on base, we had some opportunities. Skettini had a really good day today, he's on base three of four times. Overall, we just couldn't get anything going."
"It's a good baseball game against a good team. That's the way it goes, and it's not the end of the world. We got a chance to redeem ourselves tomorrow and get a win going in to the weekend."
