Men's Tennis Falls to Niagara, 6-1

Broncs close out regular season, maintain hope of postseason berth

PENNINGTON, NJ – Dhruv Tangri (Punjab, India/Cambridge International School) won at No. 2 singles, but the Rider University men's tennis team was defeated by Niagara, 6-1, Saturday evening at Hopewell Tennis Club. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 8-14 (3-4 MAAC), while the Purple Eagles improve to 6-11, 3-2 MAAC). The match was the Broncs' regular-season finale. Rider holds onto a sliver of hope to qualify for the MAAC Championships, to be played next weekend at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor. The Broncs would sneak in in the event that Niagara defeats Siena and Marist defeats Quinnipiac in their Sunday matches, creating a winning tie-breaker of points earned in matches against the collective tied teams (Rider – 8, Siena – 7, Quinnipiac - 6).

The Purple Eagles swept the doubles point to begin the match. Tangri and Nathan Slattery (Nenagh, Ireland) fell to Trevor Masi and Tanner Bedard, 7-5, at No. 1, while Roger Martinez (Girona, Spain/Saint George's School) and Dylan Lachmanen (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) also pushed Roberto Vaca and Rohan Srivistava at No. 3, but fell, 6-4. Stavros Hadjivarnava (Moutagiaka, Cyrus/British College of Gava) and Jake Grimes (Atlanta, GA/Johnson Ferry Christian Academy) fell at No. 2 to Manuel Alonso and Makkar Gurustat, 6-2.

Tangri earned a 7-5, 6-2, win over Masi at No. 2 singles. But the Purple Eagles took the remaining five singles flights to secure the 6-1 win. Grimes took Gurustat to three sets at No. 6, before falling, 6-7 (7-3), 6-4, 10-6, while Martinez fell to Bryce Bodak, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, at No. 3. Slattery and Pablo Salar Carrera (Barcelona, Spain IES Jaume Balmes) also pushed their opponents at Nos. 1 and 5, before falling by matching 6-4, 6-4, margins.

"Credit to Niagara," said Rider Head Coach Tom Battaglia. "They served huge today. We really had trouble breaking serve. We tried different looks on the return, but they just played big and never folded. We will see what happens tomorrow, but we need a lot of help to make the playoffs."
