LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Leila Koster (Duluth, GA/Rivers Academy) won at both singles and doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Siena, 6-1, Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 4-14 (2-3 MAAC), while the Saints improve to 10-11 (3-2 MAAC).
Koster and
Samantha Killin (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) combined on a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Reegan Mullaney and Maanya Viswanath. But the Saints took 6-2 wins at Nos. 1 and 3 to take the point.
In singles, the Saints took wins at the second through sixth flights, with Koster pulling out a three-set victory over Meagan Brown at No. 1, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5.
Jett Coetzee (Miami, FL/Miami Palmetto Senior) also pushed her No. 4 singles match with Viswanath to a third set, but fell, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The Saints took the remaining four flights in straight sets.
"Comes down to tomorrow if we want to extend our season," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "We had numerous opportunities today that we let slip past us. Starts on the doubles court and we just aren't getting the job done. All hope isn't lost and still have a great opportunity tomorrow."
The Broncs return to action tomorrow, when they play host to Niagara at Hopewell Tennis Club in Pennington. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. With a win, the Broncs would clinch a berth in the MAAC Championships, to be played next Saturday and Sunday at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor. A berth would be the Broncs' first in the current four-team format in program history.
